Insurance Priorities for E1-E4 Soldiers

As a junior enlisted soldier, you have limited pay but significant insurance needs. The good news: SGLI gives you $500K of life insurance for just $29/month - the best deal in insurance for people your age. Your immediate priorities should be renters insurance (protect your gear) and auto insurance (legal requirement and financial protection).

Your E1-E4 Insurance Checklist

1

Verify SGLI is at $500K

Check milConnect or your LES to confirm $500,000 SGLI coverage. Cost is $30/month (including TSGLI). This is non-negotiable - always carry max SGLI.

2

Get Renters Insurance

If you live off-post, get renters insurance immediately. Cost: ~$15/month for $30K of personal property coverage. Your barracks room or apartment contents are not covered by the Army.

3

Compare Auto Insurance

You are required to carry your state's minimum auto coverage. Get at least 3 quotes - USAA, Geico Military, and one local carrier. Military discounts can cut rates 15-25%.

4

Name a Beneficiary on SGLI

Update your SGLI beneficiary through milConnect. If you die without a named beneficiary, the $500K goes to next-of-kin which may not be who you intend.

E1-E4 Insurance FAQ

Absolutely. At $0.06 per $1,000 per month, a 20-year-old civilian would pay $100+ per month for equivalent private coverage. Your $29/month for $500K is one of the best deals in insurance anywhere. Do not reduce it.
Yes. The Army does not cover your personal belongings in barracks. If your laptop, gaming console, uniform items, or personal gear are stolen or damaged in a barracks fire, you get nothing without renters insurance. At $15/month, it is basic financial protection.
